At the end of 2013

At the end of 2013, I want to look back this year. I visited Beijing, Xining, Tibet, Xian with my father in April. Then, I finished research paper, enjoyed my last semester with my classmates and friends  and graduated from South China University of Technology. After summer holiday, I came to New York to be a graduate student. I face some problems in New York, such as I must to find a quiet place to live, I always lost, I should learn how to prepare my dinner and tried to communicate with native people. I am ready to welcome challenges in the future and try my best to be an elegant lady.

My teachers

They are my lovely teachers. This semester, I had seven different classes in a week. My teachers gave me knowledge and love. When I asked them some questions, they listened to me carefully and explained the answers clearly. Though my English is poor, they always paid attention to my homework and gave chances to help me improve my English. We could exchange our ideas and discussed our lives. Their advices are so useful to help me take care of myself.

My lovely friends

I have been in New York over 3 months and met so many people. They gave me love, advice and encouragement. And I visited some places in NYC, such as Tarry Town, Columbia University, Macy’s, and I went to Las Vegas to appreciate some exciting shows. It was a wonderful memory in my life. I love NYU, NYC and love my friends. Then, I will celebrate my birthday in 5 days. I think I will have a unforgettable birthday in America.

the life one is me

First Gift

This is the first gift I received when I came to America. Professor Gilbert gave the book to me and I had a lot of fun of it. The author used many examples to illustrate music, improvisation and arts, etc. And the writer states that “Playing the instrument means finding the graceful, balanced form for each action, so that weight is distributed and muscles hold no excessive tensions.” I agree with his statement. Some musicians learned to play instruments when they were young and they practiced every day for several years. And we should practice to balance our each part of body to express our emotion and feeling. When we are nervous, we cannot relax our muscles and may make some mistakes, but if we liberate our minds and body, we can have more energy to pursuit more artistic conception of music.

Rehearsed in the church

Today, I went to the church for rehearsing. It was always interesting. The small church is full of love and happiness, I like it. This is the third time I had been there. It is Christmas season, now people discussed how to decorate the church. Church music is so beautiful and I enjoy singing them. Every Sunday, we will sing some piece of church music on the stage and listen to the vicar’s speech. The title of this week is “satisfied”, the vicar let us notice that we are never satisfied, but we should enjoy every moment.

After the concert

After the concert, all the students got together and took photos with Professor Gilbert. Then we took photos with our classmates. Some of them from different countries, we always shared our experience in our own country, and I could hear some interesting stories about Turkey, Korea and Chile, etc. It can help me have a wider perspective of the world. I hope we will have many other chances to cooperate with each other. Furthermore, I will remember this happy concert forever.

During the concert

Professor Gilbert was the host of the concert. He introduced the special concert to the audience. Then, we greeted to the musicians in Norway and Ireland. It’s a fantastic concert because artists were from different places, and we performed together at the same time. Internet is an amazing invention. When I was dancing or singing on the stage, I could see musicians from Norway and Ireland on the screen, and we could cooperate with each other perfectly. It is improvisation that I sang or danced may reflect my thinking without practicing before and I must pay attention to cooperate with my partners. I like this kind of performance because everything and every moment are unique.

Before “Far From the Shores We Know”

“Far From the Shores We Know” is a special concert which is about improvisations. All the musicians and dancers did not have enough opportunities to practice before the concert, and they should express their feeling through instruments and body language. It was the challenge for me because I was not sure what shall I do at the beginning. Fortunately, Professor Gilbert and my classmates spent more than a month to prepare this concert, so we could know what we should do on the stage. We discussed the theme in the class, and everyone could exchange their ideas. It was the excellent way to let students have more information and come up with more good ideas about improvisation.

Let it snow

When I got up, New York is white, when I go to the supermarket, the road is white. It is a beautiful world I had never been to, because I lived in south of China where is always warm before I came to New York. Though today is cold, I can play with snow and make a snow ball. It is so interesting.

New York is a great city

New York is a great city. Though the city is noisy and crowed, we can have a lot of fun here. I can go to visit all kinds of museums, communicate with different artists on Washington Square and appreciate concerts, etc. Last week, I went to Stuyvesant High School to appreciate their student’s concert. It was excellent. All the teenagers tried their best to let audience enjoy the concert. Teenagers have enough energy to discover new area. Music education can help them get into the habit of creating something interesting. More and more parents and teachers pay attention to music education.

Great Choir Concert

We finished the concert and all of us did a great job tonight. I am proud of my classmates. Though Professor Wright was not here, we could also enjoy our concert. Different people with distinctive background, we sang together, we practiced together, and it was not an easy job. Because we should sang like one person. Some of my classmates who major in law or business, they had plenty of homework to do, but they always practiced our songs every morning. I met many students after I joined the NYU Women’s Choir, and I had more new friends in New York now.

It will be an amazing night

In two hours, it will be my last performance on stage this semester. NYU women’s choir is a family full of love and creativity. All ladies get together every Tuesday and practice the beautiful songs. Professor Wright is really excited but she will not be there tonight. I really love choir and NYU women’s  choir is excellent. We practiced not only English Songs but also Japanese song and all the students had a lot of fun. I am ready to go to theater and make up.  We have a dress rehearsal before the choir concert. Tonight will be an amazing night.

New Home

I moved to Bay 46st Brooklyn last week. It is a beautiful area near Coney Island.  I love sea.  When I decided to move out of Newport, I looked for another place near sea. It is not so hard to find a house near sea in New York. When I was a child, my mother told me that seashore is my homeland.  When I see the sea, I will not feel lonely in New York. Though it may take 1 hour by the subway to NYU, I hope I can enjoy my life in Brooklyn.

Excellent experience

I went to the church and rehearsed last Sunday. Professor Wright is a fantastic conductor.  When I followed her to the church, I saw a different world.  This church is not large, but everybody knows  each other. People shared their happiness and helped people in need. Although I lived near Coney Island and must got up early to take the subway to the church, I loved the church and wanted to join the big family. After rehearsed, Professor Wright and other people in the choir gave some advice to help me adapt the new life in New York. The church is full of love.

Music education is needed

How can we use music education to teach students’ creativity?

Music is an auditory art, and it is different from language arts or visual arts. We can see pictures, read books and watch movies, but we can only listen to and imagine the contents of music. Having an appreciation for music, then, fosters imagination, and imagination is the source of creativity. For example, when we appreciate Mozart's symphonies, we can imagine  beautiful scenery, happiness, and love. Furthermore, when children learn to play instruments, they have a special way to express their feelings. Moreover, they can play instruments to calm themselves down, and get into the habit of discovering the beauty of their world. Therefore, music education is needed because it cultivates students’ creativity.

To discuss creativity, we must first define it, according to Wikipedia, “Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and valuable is created (such as an idea, a joke, a literary work, a painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc.). Creativity can also be defined ‘as the process of producing something that is both original and worthwhile or characterized by originality and expressiveness and imaginative’.”

Many people believe that learning music can cultivate the abilities to think critically and positively. Indeed, many famous people learned music when they were children. For example, Albert Einstein, a famous scientist who received the Nobel Prize in physics, was also a musician. When he was six years old, his father taught him the violin. Then, he became an excellent violinist and always performed on the stage. He preferred to play Mozart’s music, some pieces which gave him positive energy, helping him analyze the life differently. When the scientist faced problems of research, he played music to relieve his pressure and changed his mind to think about the experiment in other ways.  While music is an abstract art, science consists of statistic, facts and research, which focus on the certain issue. Scientists may try to remove several barriers. If they are in dilemma for a while, it will probably cause emotional instability which is disadvantageous to the experiment. The abilities to appreciate or play music can provide scientists positive energy and let them have enough space to imagine the different methods to achieve their goals.

In another example, Charles Robert Darwin, a geologist and scientist who gave us more information about evolution theory. He learned flute when he was a child. Benjamin Franklin was a famous politician in America; he also learned music when he was young. Instruments can imitate natural sounds and inner voice. Learners create music related to whatever they think. Although people may be tired and nervous, their souls sway in the wind with the beautiful notes when they are immersed in the music universe. Moreover, people analyzed something significant in new ways and have more positive attitude if they have abilities to appreciate or play music.

And main music creative activities include performance, improvisation and composition. Music teachers play the important role in music education. To begin with, teachers must provide an appropriate environment for students to play music. The environment should be quiet and comfortable. Then, students can pay attention to the class without any interruption. In addition, before the class, teachers must design the special warm-up to wear off the strangeness between teacher and students, and then, students will have enthusiasm to work together without bashfulness. For instance, mirroring is an excellent game for teachers to become friends with students. Teachers can use body language to describe his or her name, and all the students imitate the action of teacher. And then, one student uses his/her special body language to explain his/her name and other people imitate him/her. After a while, the classroom will fill with giggles and laughter. During the process of playing games with students, teachers can gain much information about every student and use specific methods to motivate their creativity, because their body language can reflect their character. Then, teachers can move on to the class. Improvisation is a significant musical creative activity. Students can be divided into small groups and use everything in the classroom to create sounds and present stories by themselves, and others can appreciate their performance. For example, we can move chairs and tables to create some sounds to perfrom somebody are angry with others. Moreover, we can clink the forks together to show our happiness. Students should use something to create different sounds to illustrate their thoughts without practicing before. Participants should imagine the sound before they move tables or clink forks. If students have chances to join these kinds of activities, they may have a habit of imagining and creating.

In addition, students can bring their own instruments to the class and play them together. One student, for instance, can sing a song and the other students can accompany on their instruments or divide them into several groups, and each group improvise together. Because students’ improvisation without any preparation, they must discover and imagine the music which can related to their ideas. The process of discovering and imagining is helpful to let them get accustomed to creating new materials.

In conclusion, Music education is needed because it can make contributions to improving students’ creativity and giving them relaxation and happiness.

Special class

Last week, we had a class at a restaurant. It’s a special class. We had delicious dinner first. And then, we appreciated the video was made by Professor Gilbert. After that, some of our classmates played music together without practicing before. It is so excited for me that I’ve never had class like this one. Not only all the students and professors are friends, bur also like families. Although some of international students went to New York alone, we enjoyed our lives in NYU and never felt lonely. Our professors and classmates gave us encouragement and love. Our parents were worried about our health, ability, but we always told them that we like having classes at NYU and we could take care of ourselves, because people around us were so nice and usually gave us advice to help us solve problems.I like Tuesday because I can attend Professor Gilbert’s class.

Great day

Last weekend, my friend’s brother with his film crew came to New York to shoot a documentary. They want to make a documentary to memory of our national hero Li Hong Zhang. Li Hong Zhang had been to New York many years ago. The director prefers to add some new elements in the documentary. Then, they contacted me and used camera to record my daily life. They followed me to my dorm and library. The director told me that just ignored the camera and read the books like usual. Afternoon, I was chatting with ladies at Washington Square and they recorded our conversation. About 5.pm, we went to Brooklyn to record the beautiful sunset and the scenery of Manhattan. It's really beautiful. I hope I can be there next time with my classmates.

Happy dinner

We had dinner with Professor Gilbert last night. It’s so funny. He was so nice and provided a free and relaxed environment to us to discuss about our video and performance in December. And we communicated with each other. We talked about food, music, education and different cultures. It was so interesting to teach my classmate to use chopsticks. He was so smart and learned it so quickly. When I was in South China University of Technology, I usually had dinner with my professors, and they gave me guidance to do some research and helped me discover something interesting. I miss my teachers. Although I am in New York, we use facetime or wechat to have conversation about my new life. I really enjoy my life in New York.

I love the book

Last week, Professor Gilbert gave us a gift. I really love this book. The title of the book is Free Play and the author is Stephen Nachmanovitch.
The writer contends that “we are all improvisers.” Personally I agree with the statement. Every moment in our lives just happens only once. For instance, I sang a song with my friends under the sunshine at Washington Square, and we added many new elements in this piece of music without practicing before and everyone enjoyed it. Senior ladies and other students gave applause to us. However, when we tried to repeat it next day in classroom, it turned out that we could not play the same piece of music any more. What was worse, some of us could not even remember any element of our improvisation. The environment had been changed. The piece of music we played could reflect our mind and feeling. How could we sing the same song without the same mood? We are the improvisers. This reminded me that when I was a high school student, my mother always prepared dinner for me.  Although the dishes were similar, tastes were different every day. She might not add the same amount of salt or pepper to the dishes. She was also an improviser. Another example is that when the president gives the same speech to students, each time the speech may be different. The gestures, expressions may be various, which means the president is an improviser.

Life is really attractive because it is unpredictable and it cannot be copied. Any person, any moment, and any culture is unique. Every improviser create a wonderful brandnew world.

Les Choristes: I like this song

This piece of music is an interlude of Les Choristes. This film is a French drama film directed by Christophe Barratier. The plot of this film is interesting. The teacher assembled a choir and used music to let the “difficult” children welcome future with smile.
A boy and a girl sang the beautiful melody together. And the song was a bridge between teacher and children. The teacher used music to convey the positive attitude to let the students have courage to face difficulties.

Expanded Music: my favorite music

Vltava, part of Má vlast ( My homeland ),  portrays the history and scenery of Czech, and meanwhile, is a set of six symphonic poems composed by composer Bedoich Smetana.  Vltava was known by its German name Die Moldau and finished on 4th April, 1875.

This piece of music is a depiction of the beauty of the countryside along Vltava, the  longest river in Czech. Full of Beautiful and encouragement, famous tune in Vltava is from an folk Czech song.

Musicologist John Clapham, once said "a cross-section of Czech history and legend and impressions of its scenery, and ... conveys vividly to us Smetana's view of the ethos and greatness of the nation", and this is the same feeling I share with Professor Clapham when I appreciate the piece of music.
